The South African Navy is undergoing a facelift. All four Corvettes have been delivered and the first submarines will be commissioned next year.
Although Simons Town has become the main base, Durban will increase its diving training. Women have now been included for the first time.
With the escalation of pirates on the open seas, the navy will be well placed to protect commercial shipping routes which carry most of the country’s exports and imports. The new submarines will be used for surveillance and information gathering.
Johannes Mudimu, the chief of SA Navy, says their small navy relies on its subs because submarines are the country’s force multiplier.
